Download Free technews From viewzoft Its always only a matter of time. A little less than a year after the first quantum cryptographic network was demoed, a group of researchers at MIT have announced a working implementation of a hack thats been around in theory since 1998 but never implemented. Skirting around ol Wernie Heisenberg and that Principle of his, the team exploited quantum entanglement to read the encryption keys encoded in photon polarizations from their momentums, avoiding detection by either end -- in other words, doing what was once thought impossible by cryptographers. The system isnt perfect, however -- in this early incarnation it can only nab 40% of transmitted data before giving itself away, and more importantly, it requires the invention of a "quantum non-demolition box" before the attacker can be anywhere but the same room as the receiver, since right now both attacker and receiver need to be using the same photon detector. Sounds like that might put a damper on that whole "undetectable" thing. Still, the researchers sound upbeat -- theyre saying the work proves that no secret is truly safe. Were just wondering if theyre pushing MIT to rename their department SETEC ASTRONOMY. ( Read More )

Download Free technews From viewzoft Just over a week after a dubious duo found a way to commandeer a Mac thanks to an elusive flaw in QuickTime (of all things), Apples security police have purportedly fixed the flaw and issued an update. Apparently, the hole could be "exploited through a rigged website and let an attacker control computers running both Mac OS X and Windows," and the firm elaborated by stating that a "maliciously crafted Java applet could lead to arbitrary code execution" if users didnt apply the patch. The newest version of QuickTime now sits at 7.1.6, and reportedly "repairs the problem by performing additional checking," and interestingly enough, Apple seemingly tipped its hat to Dino Dai Zovi and the TippingPoint Zero Day Initiative for reporting the issue. So make sure you fire up that Software Update today if you havent already -- a presumably small bundle of downloadable joy should be waiting. ( Read More )

Download Free technews From viewzoft A standards group has completed work on digital signature technology designed to ensure data authenticity between interacting Web servers.
Version 1.0 of the Digital Signature Services standard provides a tamper-proof mechanism to provide electronic timestamps, postmarks or official corporate imprimaturs. Members of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) gave the digital signature standard its highest level of ratification, the standard group said Thursday.
OASIS governs many emerging standards in the domain of Web services, a term that refers to sophisticated interactions of different servers over the Internet. With a digital signature Web service, a company could use a separate server to handle the chore rather than building it directly into each application that needed it.
The digital signature standard has two components, one for the signature itself and one for verification of the signature, OASIS said. So, for example, a computer service could send a document to a server to receive a digital signature or send a document and its signature to a server that will verify the documents authenticity.
One organization that has an interest in digital signatures and that worked with OASIS to develop the standard is the Universal Postal Union, a United Nations agency. Its working to incorporate the digital signature standard into its Electronic Post Mark system (UPU EPM), OASIS said. ( Read More )
